That location at the corner of Arch and Main always has been a happening place to enjoy good people and great food. Initially constructed in 1906 to house the Ohio Theatre, which played silent movies, the Mathias family opened Jeanette' Lounge in 1947. Jeanette and Frank, who lived in the apartments above the restaurant, ran the restaurant for more than 30 years. According to Anthony's owner, Patricia Buetel, the restaurant was a hot spot and those memories are proudly displayed on her restaurant's walls.
While Jeanette managed the restaurant, Frank spent most of his time in the basement, where he would butcher the meat for the restaurant as well as bake the breads in the prep area. Buetel explains, "Jeanette's was the place to go it was the place for everyone who was anyone. " A mural, which was spotted in a photograph of the restaurant when it belonged to Mathias, was restored in 2006. Populated by various people, a mermaid and a white horse, the 10 feet wide by four feet high work of art is the last image that diners have when leaving Anthony's. A revolving door of restaurants - Paul's Supper Club, Derf's, Hunan Gates and the Main Street Diner and Lounge - occupied the space until the Buetels opened Anthony's Italian Restaurant in October 2005. It was in honor of Jeanette Mathias that Buetel named the banquet room, Jeanette's Party Room. After all, Jeanette Mathias knew how to host a party. |
